French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou gave a sober assessment of whether he could tame a hung parliament that ousted his predecessor, Michel Barnier, just last week.
Bayrou, a three-time presidential candidate who has long warned of French fiscal profligacy, inherits the same rowdy parliament that felled Barnier.
The priority for Bayrou, a close Macron ally, will be passing a special law to roll over the 2024 budget, with a nastier battle over the 2025 legislation looming early next year.
Bayrou, head of the MoDem group that is allied to Macron’s party, was appointed nine days after Michel Barnier’s government was ousted by parliament in a historic no-confidence vote.
