Trump announced the tariff's implementation date on Monday night as he signed a batch of executive orders from the Oval Office.
The order did not immediately institute any new tariffs, as Trump had promised during his campaign to do on Day One, Instead, it directed incoming Cabinet officials to initiate a number of reviews and prepare a series of policy recommendations, while postponing decisions that could lead to new tariffs until April 1 at the earliest.
With tariffs among the words Trump has claimed he loves the most, and repeated promises to impose across the board tariffs on day 1 of his term, the President’s inaugural address did not have any specific announcement on tariff hikes.
Trump, who promised a new "golden age" for America in his inaugural address on Monday, has repeatedly threatened to impose duties on goods imported to the U.S. from the EU, stoking fears of a possible trade war.
